NAWANG KHECHOG

"KARUNA"

Domo Records

It hasn't been until very recently that part of the traditional music created and performed by Buddhist monks has begun to have a certain success in the western culture. Such cases as that of Lama Gyurmé or Nawang Khechog illustrate this success. Our society needs new sounds, true new sounds and acoustic sensations, and the music from Tibet is a magnificient offer worth considering. Nawang, for example, used to be a Tibetan monk in the past, acting as a hermit for four years. His passion for meditation and philosophy partly shape his exceptional conception of music. Naturalized as an Australian, even though he now lives in the United States, Nawang learned to play the aboriginal Didgeridoo. This and other sounds can be heard in Karuna (most of them are produced by native instruments) thus shaping a work of an extreme sensitivity and introspection. The album is very much inspired on the Tibetan atmospheres as well as on nature, and its character is basically meditative. Japanese musician Kitaro, a master of synthesizers, produces the album. Both musicians have known each other since the early nineties and have often collaborated on different tours. All the multiple influences that Khechog has gathered during his travelling life can be perceived in this work, which consists on eight themes that invite to peace and reflection.
