EDITORIAL INFORMATION

In 1961, the world saw the first man in space. Only eight years later Neil A. Armstrong set foot onto the Moon. How could mankind cross its former frontiers so quickly? The Gemini Space Programme was the project that bridged NASA's pioneering steps into space and Apollo's landing on the Moon. Gemini - Steps to the Moon tells the stoy of both technological innovations and human persistence. The astronauts were to remain in space up to two weeks -incredibly long for that time. Former flights had lasted just 15 minutes, but the new challenges were mastered. Between April 1964 and November 1966, Gemini featured ten manned missions, succesufully establishing techniques of spacewalking and docking. For the first time, orbiting vehicles were brought together, and the "rendezvous in space" could take place. The book documents Gemini as an essential part of NASA research. It follows the development of the programme from its earliest days and gives insight into difficulties and achievements of the missions. Put in its proper place in American history, Gemini turns out to be one of mankind's major strides towards the future.
