EDITORIAL INFORMATION As the Apollo program reached its end, so Skylab became the focus of manned spaceflight in America, as "the next logical step in space." American astronauts had previously spent only a few days in space, onboard rather cramped spacecraft, with defined mission objectives. Engineering and technical objectives had always taken precedence over pure science. The Skylab space station was launched in 1973, and it was by far the largest spacecraft intended for manned occupation that had ever been placed into long-term orbit. In his new book, David Shayler chronicles the evolution of the station, its infrastructure on the ground, each of the three manned missions, summary of results, achievements and the lessons learned. The creation of the International Space Station is the real legacy of Skylab as American astronauts once again embark on extended missions around the Earth. Shayler's Skylab is not just a story of space hardware and space science, but also of space explorers and pioneers. Using official NASA documentation and interviews with the astronauts and key personnel, the inside story of Skylab is presented as the story unfolds. (Extracted from the press release).
