From an educational point of view, Astronomy is an interdisciplinary science, having all the advantages this fact implies. This probably is one of the reasons why Astronomy has been included as an optative subject in the courses of ESO (Compulsory Secondary Education in Spain). This book intends to divulge at the level of a person at these ages the current knowledge in this matter. It also has more than forty practical activities, as corresponds to the name "Workshop", which surely will render the acquisition of the theoretical knowledge much more pleasant indeed. Although almost all of them are easily attainable in their level, some may require a higher level in Physics or Mathematics. (Extracted from the Prologue). GENERAL TABLE OF CONTENTS
OUR REVIEW This is the first time we have in our hands a book that has been created and written in Spain aimed at being utilized in our secondary schools. Only because of this fact it would already deserve the best of praise, above all if we take into account the fact that Astronomy has virtually been absent from educational programs in Spain until very recently. Furthermore, this book by Ricardo and Antonio Moreno has got many other attractive traits: so many, that any other person, including those people who have left school since a long time ago, would find in it the perfect textbook to learn in a didactic way about their favourite hobby. Completely updated (it even contains the images of the already famous Martian meteor ALH-84001), this work is a gradual discovery of the sky and its wonders, all that spiced with plentiful practical problems to be solved and activities to be carried out, which no doubt will delight the students. Aimed rather to our young population, we must not fear that we might find in this book a complex, too technical language. On the contrary, the text is in actual fact a perfect introduction that will surely awaken some vocations among our students. Well supplied with photographs and explanatory graphics (perhaps its most remarkable characteristic), Taller de Astronomía ("Astronomy Workshop") is one of those books having their own identity that the students will keep in their library. There also is a complementary Guía Didáctica ("Didactic Guide") for the teacher. |
