September 19, 2005 DOLORES CASTRO: "FIFTH DIMENSION" Dreaming / Musea Records Dolores Castro offers us a careful selection of themes in which she presents us the best of herself as a composer. "Fifth Dimension" is, no doubt, a work that cannot leave any listener unconcerned. The album can be labelled between the most symphonic paths of Ambient and the most electronic side of New Instrumental Music. The themes possess well-defined melodies, with a romantic air often dyed with a suggestive aura of mystery and melancholy touches. The palette of sounds is wealthy, sober, elegant and agile, with a predominance of majestic tones, warm electronics, and diaphanous ambiences. The piano leads several passages. The orchestrations and the arrangements are well done, and a careful task can be appreciated behind every element of sound. Dolores has released such an extraordinary album that it cannot but awake enormous expectations on what this artist will be capable of doing in the future. EDUARDO FONTANA http://www.iona.uk.com RICHARD BONE: "SAIYUJI" Quirkworks Laboratory Disks In this imaginative work of Space Ambient, Richard Bone approaches the World Music and Atmospheric Pop. The artist deals with, not a mere fussion among all these cultural heritages, but innovative rhythmic-melodic compositions, of an electroacoustic conception, while taking advantage of the expression channels of the vintage analog synthesizers, furthermore surpassing cultural barriers. One of the most impressive, best achieved compositions is "Saiyugi (dawn)". The CD also contains a CDROM track, in which two video clips can be found. EDGAR KOGLER http://www.richardbone.com KRIS TINER / MIKE BAGGETTA: "THERE, JUST AS YOU LOOK FOR IT" pfMENTUM This is a daring release merging Avantgarde Jazz with acoustic experimentation and influences from New Music, as well as other, more difficult to place, traits which contribute to endow this release with a great originality. The rhythms are usually based on the drums and bass. ALEJANDRO HINOJOSA http://www.dankdisk.com A. Hers are themes where the voice has a basic role. She sings, and besides, records her vocals in different configurations so as to create choruses and other often fascinating effects. The melody is an important element in all the compositions. The basic style includes Celtic and Dark Folk traits. VALERIANO GUIOL http://www.newtertianrecordings.com CAN ATILLA: "CONCORDE" Groove Unlimited "Concorde" is an album that mix the 1970s (represented by the Concorde aircraft of the title) analog synths magic with sophisticated Synth-Pop. On the whole, this album has a great emotional load. Using the synthesizers in an unusually warm way, the composer creates melodies full of symphonism and strength. The music flyes towards otherwordly landscapes, at times with melancholy touches, at times optimistic, always very expressive. In all, 13 magnificient themes in which the artist proves his talent. Ann Burstyn's powerful voice is the high point of a work that will awake the enthusiasm of the followers of the best innovative Pop. Besides the focus on Pop, part of the music shows a tendency towards Gothic. Though there are slow passages, much of the music has a lively rhythm. DEREK DOARN http://www.dreamaria.com PETER ULRICH: "ENTER THE MYSTERIUM" City Canyons Records In his solo music, Peter Ulrich, the outstanding percussionist from the band Dead Can Dance, resembles a minstrel from the Middle Ages, yet one adapted to the new times. In this album, a multitude of elements, apparently opposed, are perfectly fused, from Neofolk with medieval reminiscences to alternative Pop, as well as many others, yet their individual personality can hardly be appreciated, as the most impressive results tend to dominate. Peter Ulrich makes a very personal music, sometimes dark, some other times of a more festive hue, yet always attractive. PASCUAL JURADO http://www.citycanyons.com THE PRIME TIME SUBLIME COMMUNITY ORCHESTRA: "SONGS THAT WILL NEVER WIN A GRAMMY" Corporate Blob Records Most of the nine pieces included in this album range between popular "orchestral" music of the 1950s and alternative Pop-Jazz. Nonetheless, there are some elements from them that turn out to be unclassifiable and surprising... There are songs which are sung by a computer, with live, orchestral accompaniment. All these vocals were created using the latest voice synthesis technology. Touches of sound collage and astounding "vocal" effects are also present, and even come to have a leading role in different parts of the release. This singular experiment has a daring, fresh and innovative result, and an important effect of sonic shock in the listener. EDGAR KOGLER http://www.primetimesublime.com VERPLANKEN: "THE MISSING TRACKS" "The Missing Tracks" is an album very much in the instrumental Psychedelic wave, yet also near to Ambient. Verplanken's style shows his peculiar personal technique. A great amount of imagination pervades the entire album. The music is enigmatic, nocturnal, oneiric. A definite tendency towards the cosmic and the mysterious pervades the whole work. Hopefully, "The Missing Tracks" will allow him to cross some frontiers and his music will come to be more widely known. No doubt he deserves so. ALEJANDRO HINOJOSA http://www.verplanken.com JUAN CARLOS GARCIA: "BHAGAVAD GITA, EL CANTO DEL SEÑOR" Pulsar Studios This work is a true example of dedication and expressiveness. The composer builds melodic themes of a great beauty, and some turn out to be highly mysterious. His music has a well defined style that no doubt will awake the enthusiasm of the followers of the best New Age. The pieces take us from the East to the West all the same, in a blend of sonic colors of a exquisite scent. The Hindi traditional elements provide the perfect counterpoint to an album that transpires sensitivity from all its pores. VIRGINIA TAMAYO http://www.juancarlosgarciaweb.com ATTILA JELINEK: "CLOSE ON" The music by Attila Jelinek is a fresh fusion of Synth-Pop with ethereal atmospheres, Progressive Rock touches, and elements of Techno. Most of the pieces have upbeat rhythms, except for some where there are long soft passages in a romantic key. DEREK DOARN http://www.people.freenet.de/guitarlight/ UGUR DOGAN: "GAM I AZAD" A very interesting production has reached us. The music by Ugur Dogan, which is mostly electronic, has the typical characteristics of tendencies like Space, New Instrumental Music, and World Music. Besides, it has certain romantic touches, and sometimes some of Classical Music. "Gam I Azad" is a good example of the excellent imagination of this artist. EDGAR KOGLER http://www.meditoliamusic.com MARK BRULAND: "WISCONSIN DAWN" In this album, Mark Bruland offers us a gathering of warm melodic pieces, with ethereal and romantic airs. His fans will find here many of the ingredients that characterize this musician. "Mystery" is an evocative release where the music, wrapped up in floating sound textures, goes through a universe of legends, magic and mystery. In this release, Loibant utilizes electronics with great imagination, succeeding in creating musical structures far from the most usual trends, and which besides happen to be attractive, bewitching. To do this he uses unconventional sonic architectures. Some pieces are slow, and others possess a very agile rhythm. In quite passages, the rhythm assumes the role of melody, given its complexity. His compositions are overflown with dynamism, cosmic grandeur, a shattering rhythm, and occasionally, also romanticism and passion. The album has Ambient, Industrial and also cosmic elements skilfully fused together. There are plenty of powerful rhythms, of a metallic quality, enhanced by synthesizers. EDGAR KOGLER http://www.at-mooss.com JOSEPH LOIBANT: "SHADOWY" At-Mooss Records Joseph Loibant is one of the most interesting representatives of the kind of electronic music that is currently being done. The artist gathers imaginative musical ideas in this album, under a general focus approaching Dark Ambient and Space Sequencer Music. The music also has certain Techno traits. The piece that opens the CD is a ghostly theme of an unusual strength, with a disquieting melody. In other themes, rhythm and melody become fused into complex constructions, where the sequencers shape the melodies. A great amount of imagination pervades the entire album. In a few words, Loibant has created a thrilling sonic adventure in this work, of a great artistic quality. This album is the fourth disk of a 4CD+1DVD set tittled "Box", but it is also available separately. EDGAR KOGLER http://www.at-mooss.com ALQUIMIA & GLEISBERG: "GARDEN OF DREAMS" BSC Music / Prudence Alquimia has collaborated in this occasion with Rudiger Gleisberg to make a magnificient album with a certain classical flavor. The result is quite unexpected and worthy of attention. If to Alquimia's beautiful voice we join a handful of warm, emotive melodies, we will get as a result this perfect album. The music is very expressive, with romantic and also solemn traits, yet without falling into an excessive sweetness. Dreamy themes, perfectly intertwined, both with respect to the music and the lyrics, follow one another without ups and downs. The grandiosity of the music and its symphonism make of the listening of this album a complete experience. HECTOR JORDAN http://www.bscmusic.com JUAN CARLOS GARCIA: "MUSICA SAGRADA" Pulsar Studios In this album, Juan Carlos Garcia offers us an exquisite selection of pieces extracted from already released albums of his, together with several short versions. The album, one of the most extraordinary releases in his career given the extreme sensitivity of the themes it contains, furthermore incorporates a new one: "El Templo de la Verdad de Pallas Atenea". Most of the pieces can be labelled within the New Instrumental Melodic Music, although they also have symphonic and cosmic characteristics. Some of the pieces have a certain ethnic air, others are quite mysterious. VIRGINIA TAMAYO http://www.juancarlosgarciaweb.com LI XIANGTING: "SLEEPING LOTUS" Real Music Li Xiangtin's music, based in ancient Chinese instruments (the guqin and xiao) is very smooth and relaxing. The guqin is a seven-stringed zither. The xiao is a bamboo flute. The album is very much inspired on the Chinese traditional atmospheres as well as on nature, and its character is basically meditative. Listening to the notes produced by these instruments, one cannot help but feeling peace and calm. MARCELLA CIRIGNOLA http://www.realmusic.com PSICODREAMICS: "MYTHOMUSIC" Syngate Originally produced in 1997, this is a memorable work, where the composer proved his great imagination. "Mythomusic" is a mystic adventure throughout fourteen suggestive themes evoking a world of fantasy. Using the synthesizers in an unusually warm way, Psicodreamics creates a collection of melodic pieces, with cosmic and romantic airs, that have a certain melancholy touch. His melodies appear to grow little by little, in a continuous crescendo that reaches wonderful heights. The music turns out to be dreamy, even oniric, with ethereal sounds, cosmic textures and a careful musical sensitivity that make of this album an ideal vehicle to let imagination soar through unearthly worlds. The album includes a bonus track, "Azhdark Passion", a remix composed in 1995. HECTOR JORDAN http://www.psicodreamics.com PSICODREAMICS: "THE UNKNOWN FRONTIER" Syngate Originally released in 1993, this was the first album composed and performed by Psicodreamics. This is one of his albums of a most ghostly inspiration, where the electronics we are so used to sounds less symphonic and at the same time more disquieting. To compose the music in this album, Psicodreamics was inspired by the frontier that separates the life and the death. This album shows a new and promising artist in constant progression, whose music, very imaginative, unusually mature, takes us to a peculiar journey towards The Unknown. The instrumentation and the sonic effects maintain a gloomy character throughtout the album, contributing a series of undescribable sensations for the listener. Synthesizers displaying timeless sounds shape an electronic pathway towards the universe of death, souls sliding between dimensions, and mysteries of the resurrection. HECTOR JORDAN http://www.psicodreamics.com RICHARD AMOS: "BREATHE" Exhibit Music The style of the music that Richard Amos has composed for this CD can be more or less placed within SynthPop, with some characteristics typical of New Instrumental Music. There also are parts that enter Ambient and Space Music. The themes include different orientations, although within the same basic style. Several of the pieces are sung. May 12, 2005 NEURONIUM: "MYSTYKATEA" Neuronium Records The sentence that best describes this album is "We do not need the "Truth" in order to manage our life", as Huygen writes in the booklet. The compositions have in several instances a strong charge of social criticism, as is obvious in such titles as "Religion means War" (the first track), a shocking piece inspired by the dark link between war and religion. The second track, "Mystykatea (The Ademian Line)" is inspired by the science fiction novel "The Ademian Line" by the late writer Erna Olinger. This theme is dedicated to the memory of Erna. She was a good friend of Huygen. Using synthesizers to create a heavenly, magical world, Huygen makes in this album a kind of electronic music of a clearly Cosmic style. Ethereal sounds and vaporous melodies envelop one by one all the themes of the work. The music flows in a consistent, uninterrupted stream, communicating a wide range of feelings and emotions. "In Aliens I trust" is a cosmic-symphonic theme of an unusual strength. "Believe in yourself" is a a beautiful composition that will no doubt appeal to a wide audience. The CD also contains a CD-ROM track with an impressive videoclip based on the piece "Mystykatea (The Ademian Line)", created and designed by Tomas C. Gilsanz. JORGE MUNNSHE http://www.neuronium.info MICHEL HUYGEN: "SENSORIAL" (2CD) Neuronium Records "Sensorial" contains historical material from the whole Michel Huygen's career. He offers us new versions of many legendary pieces. The music of this album unites Huygen's symphonism with floating atmospheres and a general approach in accordance with the topics that inspired it. "Sensorial" reaches deep inside when listened to with due attention. "Geomagnetica" is terrestrial electronic music, that seems to evoke the most spectacular physic natural phenomena of our world, but with an important romantic charge as if emphasizing the beauty and fragility of the Earth. "Neuromagnética" takes us to the mysteries of the interior of the brain. The music of this suite is disquieting, oneiric. It seems to re-create the functioning of the neuron spiderweb, as well as approach the inscrutable enigmas of the origin of the Psyche. "Senso" (second CD) is an elaborated electronic symphony of a cosmic orientation, that also has elements of romantic music. These latter can be appreciated above all in the general structure of the compositions, with a great protagonism of the melodies. The music turns out to be relaxing, at times melancholic, with some mystery touches, with warm textures and soft colors. No doubt this CD will appeal to the fans of Michel Huygen's music as well as the lovers of Space Music in general. JORGE MUNNSHE http://www.neuronium.info NADIA: "THIS IS MY LIFE" Neuronium Records Excellent album this one by Nadia. The 11 compositions in it included have a great strength and an emotional beauty. Most of them have a romantic style with Classical influences. This is the case of such themes as for instance "Prophecy". Some of the pieces present some peculiar stylistic traits that differentiate them from the rest. This happens with the one that gives its name to the album, which displays obvious traits of Atmospheric Pop. The ethereal vocals provided by Nadia, complementing some of the tracks, contribute in a remarkable way to make of this album a joyful musical journey. The CD also contains a CD-ROM track with a videoclip based on the piece "This is my life". PASCUAL JURADO http://www.neuronium.info BRENDA WARREN: "AS YEARS GO BY" Neuronium Records / Seven Mile Music "As years go by" is an album that transpires sensitivity from all its pores. The music is, on the whole, melodic, soft, and with clear romantic traits. Sometimes it becomes festive, and at other times melancholy. There also are Classical traits. The soloist instrument is the piano. This is a peaceful, delicate music, exempt from great symphonisms and fireworks that would contribute nothing to the conception of the work. In a word, this is a very pleasant work to listen to. HECTOR JORDAN http://www.neuronium.info "MASPALOMAS CHILL-OUT PASION TROPICAL" Neuronium Records This is a sampler very much in the Romantic Atmospheric Pop, yet also near to New Instrumental Music and melodic Ambient. The pieces that shape this CD are: "What's impossible" by Smoo, "L'autonomie" by Smoo, "Simply you" by The Lab, "Well of Hope" by CoolWind, "Azizi" by Neuronium, "This is my life" by Nadia, "Sólo pensando en tí" by Michel Huygen & Pascal Languirand, "Give Love" by La Crem, "Love Waves" by Nadia, "If I could" by Suzanne Ciani, "Doubts and fears" by Run 2, "Wings of a bird" by Santi Picó, "Tidepools" by Jonn Serrie, "Morpheus" by Odracir Lavid, "Piel" by La Crem. All the pieces have a pleasant freshness, thanks to the imaginative melodies and atmospheres. ALEJANDRO HINOJOSA http://www.neuronium.info "CASA ALEXIO IBIZA DREAMS VOL.1" Neuronium Records Like in all the releases of the label Neuronium Records, in this sampler an astounding and at the same time attractive production is presented to us. The album is an interesting tour through different styles. There are pieces near to romantic New Instrumental Music, others with Space touches, and several with Atmospheric Pop elements. The contents of this CD is as follows: "Nofrete" by Smoo, "Entropia" by CoolWind, "Azizi" by Neuronium, "Rever en toi" by Pascal Languirand, "The colours" by The Lab, "Give Love" by La Crem, "Jungle Jam" by Constance Demby, "Papyrus" by Odracir Lavid, "Explosion of emotions" by Run 2, "Lumia Nights" by Jonn Serrie, "Tenderness" by Michel Huygen, "Suzanne's home" by Paz del Castillo, "Mother of the World" by Constance Demby, "Mano (Nono song)" by La Crem. A true delight for the ears from the first to the last theme. EDUARDO FONTANA http://www.neuronium.info RAINBOW SERPENT: "THE 8th NERVE" Manikin Records The twelve pieces included in this workd are pure electronic music, with the philosophy of exploring new sonic continents nonetheless without abandoning melody and rhythm. The style, electronic, agile and with a liberal use of sequencers, enters within the realm of Space Music, although with traits of innovative Pop and Techno. The melodies usually are warm, lively, in an atmosphere typical of a soundtrack for an adventure movie. Most noteworthy is the track "Radiotrip", where Rainbow Serpent take us to the most impressive and transcendental part of their music. In actual fact, this is a magnificient album. EDGAR KOGLER http://www.manikin.de SPYRA: "MEDITATIONEN" Manikin Records The three suites included in the album have a floating, vertiginous, dreamlike quality, as if they were an unstoppable ascent towards the starry sky. The cosmic style present in the album is melodic and symphonic, often with spectacular orchestrations with synthesizers and a certain romantic character though it doesn't fall into an excessive sweetness. There are dark, mysterious passages. Others turn out to be epic, majestic. The artist proves to be a good keyboardist, since the instrumental structure of this album is certainly complex. The result cannot be more convincing: magical atmospheres, plenty of imagination, and excellent melodies. Also magnificient is the album cover. EDGAR KOGLER http://www.manikin.de KAGERMANN, KELLER, SCHONWALDER & FRIENDS: "THE LIQUID SESSION" Manikin Records The impressive music that Thomas Kagerman, Detlef Keller, Chris Lang, Mario Schonwalder, Gerd Wienekamp, Bas Broekhuis and Andrea Syphire Leonhardi performed at the Liquid Sound Festival on November, 2003, is now available in this compact disc. The music is melodic, with strong cosmic touches and others typical of Classical Music. Also there are some ethnic traits and other varied elements that contribute to enrich these pieces. The synthesizers have quite a leading role, although they are accompanied by acoustic instruments. The richness in timbre of quite a number of ethereal passages makes it difficult to distinguish where the natural sound of a given instrument finishes and where the synthesizers begin. The expressivity that Thomas achieves with his violin is remarkable indeed. Andrea's beatiful voice turns out to be unearthly at times, and very much earthly in other occasions, perfectly fitting with the electronic textures and exotic atmospheres. EDGAR KOGLER http://www.manikin.de FLOPPY: "MU" Testing Ground This mini-CD combines Tecno elements with Industrial traits and Trance atmospheres. The melodies are dense, disquieting, and intertwine with the very structure of the rythms. There are some passages entirely devoted to experimentation with sounds. The music has a very personal, innovative style. ALEJANDRO HINOJOSA http://www.testinground.com |
April 14, 2005 JOSE BONET: "TRAS LOS CRISTALES" E.G. Tabalet Pianist Jose Bonet has composed in this CD-single a fine work that can be labelled within the New Instrumental Music. There also are Classical traits. The seven pieces are romantic, in a mood more melancholy than merry. Some passages have certain mystery traits. The expressivity that the artist achieves with the piano is remarkable indeed, without the help of any other instruments. Beautiful melodies, perfectly intertwined, follow one another without ups and downs, in a work that Bonet's followers will no doubt appreciate. Bonet's style shows his peculiar personal technique. EDUARDO FONTANA http://www.josebonet.com MARK JENKINS: "IF THE WORLD WERE TURNED ON ITS HEAD, WE WOULD WALK AMONG THE STARS" AMP Records Mark Jenkins proves his great imagination by creating a fresh electronic music, with powerful sequencer rhythms. The style, between Synth-Pop and Cosmic Music, has passages where the synthesizers create dense atmospheres. Other parts possess a great melodic beauty with romantic airs. The orchestrations are very well built, enhancing the impact of the music. The final result is very good. EDGAR KOGLER http://www.markjenkins.net JON JENKINS: "BEYOND CITY LIGHT" Spotted Peccary Music The 63 minutes of music of this compact disc by Jon Jenkins are an imaginative cosmic voyage. 63 minutes aimed at making the listener dream. The result is worthy of attention. Ethereal sounds, unearthly atmospheres and vaporous melodies envelop one by one all the themes of the album. The synthesizers provide the album with a magical atmosphere ideal to wrap the melodies in. Some passages have an overwhelming emotive nature. EDGAR KOGLER http://www.spottedpeccary.com KYLE GANN: "LONG NIGHT" Cold Blue Music In this CD-single, Kyle Gann presents a 25-minute piece. "Long night" is a piano suite of a deliberate quality, with minimalist traits and some Ambient touches. The music is of a soft character, romantic, with a certain classical flavor. More than concrete melodies in the traditional sense, melodic atmospheres that come and go. Not being quite tragic, the work maintains a certain melancholy air, perhaps hinted at by the slow cadence of the music. EDUARDO FONTANA http://www.coldbluemusic.com JIM FOX: "DESCANSOS, PAST" Cold Blue Music This CD-single consists in a 15-minute composition. The music presents Minimalist elements as well as some touches of Classical and also New Instrumental Music. By uniting the hypnotic strength of Minimalism with melodic structures typical of the most daring trends of Chamber Music, Jim Fox re-create a peculiar world, with eerie yet wondrous landscapes, as well as zones of atemporal solitude. VALERIANO GUIOL http://www.coldbluemusic.com RICK COX: "FADE" Cold Blue Music This CD-single contains a 25-minute piece by Rick Cox. "Fade" is an interesting combination of elements typical of Chamber Music and others of an minimalist character sometimes near to Ambient Music. More than concrete melodies in the traditional sense, there are chords that come and go, thus contributing to weaving an unreal environment. VALERIANO GUIOL http://www.coldbluemusic.com AGNUS DEI: "REIKI-1: HEAVENS GIFT" Indigo Music Agnus Dei (Gerald Krampl) expresses his mystic emotions in this album, whose title refers to the themes he has drawn his inspiration from. Using the piano as a solo instrument, the composer has created the music of an album that sprouts from the deepest regions of the soul. The music evokes the wonders of a quiet dusk, the peace of green grasslands, and the sound of the sea. Musically speaking, listening to the album has a relaxing effect. VIRGINIA TAMAYO http://www.indigomusic.at AGNUS DEI: "REIKI-2: INFINITE MIND" Indigo Music This is a piano release of a romantic quality, with some traits of Classical Music, presided by melody. The music is very much inspired on nature, thus shaping a work of an extreme sensitivity and introspection. In some passages, the sounds of the ocean predominate. The author also uses some electronic keyboards. Although there are some melancholy parts, the general structure of the album displays an energy that, not quite becoming euphoria, makes the music very dynamic. VIRGINIA TAMAYO http://www.indigomusic.at MARK CIABURRI: "ONE" Real Music Mark Ciaburri has a well defined objective: to communicate a feeling of full optimism to the world through his music. And judging from this album, "One", it can't be said that he has not succeeded. "One" is New Instrumental Music that sounds warm, with happiness, yet without becoming too sweetish. Mark also drinks from certain eastern influences, giving to his work a stylistic aura that goes beyond the meditative music. VIRGINIA TAMAYO http://www.realmusic.com VARIOUS: "REAL PIANO" Real Music This compilation, like its title suggests, is devoted to romantic music played with piano. The piano has quite a leading role, although it is accompanied by several other instruments. These are the contents of the CD: David London: "Horizons". Omar: "Free as a Bird". Paul Machlis: "At the Wooden Bridge". Yanni: "Whispers in the Dark" (performed by Danny Wright). Kevin Kern: "The Winding Path". Bernward Koch: "Deep Green Summer". David London: "Capture the Moment". Jim Chappell: "Mockingbird Days". George Skaroulis: "Return to Patmos". Mars Lasar: "The Blessing". Kevin Kern: "Through Your Eyes". Frederic Delarue: "A Moment of Bliss". Paul Machlis: "Farewell". Bernward Koch: "Childhood Hour". These stories in a musical form are comparable to movie soundtracks, and stimulate the imagination of the listener to re-create the emorive facts and sceneries that the music suggests. HECTOR JORDAN http://www.realmusic.com MARRY ANN: "THE HARMONY OF THE ECSTASY" "INTOLERANCE" "The Harmony of the Ecstasy" and "Intolerance" are a magnificient sample of fresh Synth-Pop. These two albums are basically upbeat, with cybernetic rhythms, percussion, and unreal environments. The melody is an important element in all the compositions. March 14, 2005 JOHN LAKVEET: "THE FORCE OF REASON" Groove Unlimited John Lakveet develops daring, imaginative ideas in this CD, preferably aimed at Space Sequencer Music. Lakveet is no doubt one of the most sophisticated flagmen of the electronic music currently being created. In this CD we find eight compositions full of emotions and electronic adventures. The whole album has a strong cosmic air, not only due to the use of synthesizers, but also because of the style of the compositions itself. There also are elements of Synth-Pop and Ambient. Several compositions have moments of a greater introspection, perhaps near to meditation, together with other instants of a simple, straightforward experimentation, yet always keeping to the most melodic aspects of the artist. Some passages are cold, mysterious. Others turn out to be warm, emotional. An album that no doubt deserves an attentive listening. EDGAR KOGLER http://www.groove.nl HEMISPHERE: "RAMBLING VOYAGE" Groove Unlimited This work by Hemisphere is a beautiful space odyssey based on the use of synthesizers, ideal to let imagination soar through unearthly worlds. A general trait of the album is the fact that the music happens to be very intense, vital, as if reflecting strong emotions. The 11 pieces included in this release have a melodic cosmic style with some Atmospheric Pop touches. The latter are basically in the rhythms. The melodies present a certain romantic character, with slight symphonic traits. Perhaps the most remarkable theme is "Night of the Living Machine", in which the melodic grandeur of Hemisphere is strongly present. EDGAR KOGLER http://www.groove.nl N-TRIBE: "TOWER OF POWER" Groove Unlimited Harald Grosskopf and Steve Baltes know each other well enough to guarantee a total understanding that generates such convincing productions as "Tower of Power". Their music, near to Trance and Psychedelic Rock, has the cosmic air of the Space Ambient Music. Throughout the four pieces we will have a chance to attend all kinds of passages, from those fragments that invite us to dance to those others that are far more experimental and whose sonic architectures transpire an originality that cannot be denied. ALEJANDRO HINOJOSA http://www.groove.nl WILLIAM PAUL: "HORSE DREAM" Delvian Records / Oranda Records / The Gate Media Group "Horse Dream" is a flight of imagination to the realms of Fantasy, which will no doubt please a wide audience. It is an impressive symphony of mysterious melodies and magical atmospheres, where the less abstract elements of Space Music merge with those more ethereal ones from New Instrumental Music. The 13 themes constitute an epic voyage and a romantic quest to the medieval legends about heroes and supernatural events. The artist offers us his mastery at creating a work full of beauty and mystery, with themes that in some occasions tend to be of a melodic romanticism, while in other instances they have an enigmatic, or even a dark air. VIRGINIA TAMAYO http://www.delvianrecords.com POTENTIA ANIMI: "DAS ERSTE GEBET" Staupa Musica This is a daring release by Potentia Animi merging Dark European Folk with Medieval Music, profanity and other, more difficult to place, traits which contribute to endow this release with a great originality. Also various influences such as Gothic, Ethnic, Rock and Gregorian chants can be perceived in some of the themes. The pieces include different orientations, although within the same basic style. Though there are slow parts, much of the music has a lively rhythm. This is, no doubt, a work that cannot leave any listener unconcerned. DOMINIQUE CHEVANT http://www.staupa-musica.com CORVUS CORAX: "SEIKILOS / GAUDIA VITE" (CD + DVD) Staupa Musica Listening to this album is travelling throughout musical tales whose landscapes are set in ancient Rome, Medieval Europe, and other lands of a supernatural character or a very mundane one... Although there are some slow passages, most of the music has a good rhythm, with a prevalence of the drums in the rhythmic structures. Bagpipes, percussion and vocals, everything is aimed at a work that in some instances overwhelms the audience. The DVD "Gaudia Vite" is a magnificient opportunity to witness the great power that Corvus Corax have when performing live. This DVD is filled with live material, which was recorded during a tour in 2002, and a lot of bonus material. Another highlight for the band was their live performance at the carnival en Venezia in front of thousands of people. No doubt we are before an album which will delight not only the followers of the Ancient and Folk music, but also those who wish to enter Corvus Corax style for the first time, the perfect mix between tradition and modernity. MARCELLA CIRIGNOLA http://www.staupa-musica.com KAT EPPLE - CHUCK GRINNELL: "AZURE PIECES OF LIFE" Emerald Web Publishing The music by Kat Epple (flutes) and Chuck Grinnell (keyboards) in this album possesses a style pretty near to the New Instrumental Music, with an important presence of romantic melodies. There also are elements of Ambient, Celtic, Jazz and World Music. Well wrapped into convincing arrangements and a perfect sonority, Kat and Chuck offers us 16 themes of a intimate nature, having pleasant textures. "Azure pieces of life" contains true musical jewels. It would be unfair to point out at any given one of her tracks: just enjoy each one of them. SARAH TOMBLIN http://www.katepple.com BETWEEN INTERVAL: "SECRET OBSERVATORY" Spotted Peccary Music In the most perfect cosmic vein, this work will delight the lovers of this kind of music. The four long electronic pieces that integrate this CD are each one a journey towards the unknown. All of them possess a decidedly mysterious, enigmatic character, like soundtracks for interstellar voyages. If you pays an adequate attention, don't wonder if you feel the entire starry universe open up before your eyes. EDGAR KOGLER http://www.spottedpeccary.com SPOOKY ACTIONS: "SONGS OF THE NATIONS" Muse Eek This is a daring release by Spooky Actions merging avantgarde Jazz with music of Native Americans, and other, more difficult to place, traits which contribute to endow this release with a great originality. The result is quite unexpected and worthy of attention. The artists present seven compositions of a fresh air, where rhythm and melody are very well combined. They are pieces of a complex conception, yet at the same time they are easy to listen to. MARCELLA CIRIGNOLA http://www.muse-eek.com BRUCE ARNOLD / OLIVIER KER OURIO: "DUETS" Muse Eek Bruce Arnold (guitar) has collaborated in this occasion with Olivier Ker Ourio (harmonica) to make an interesting album. The result is a collection of 11 pieces whose style fluctuates around Avantgarde Jazz. ALEJANDRO HINOJOSA http://www.muse-eek.com SPOOKY ACTIONS: "EARLY MUSIC" Muse Eek This work by Spooky Actions is an imaginative fusion of Avantgarde Jazz and Medieval Music. Some Classical traits are also perceived. The band present in this album a compilation of pieces by ancient composers, performed by them in Jazzy versions. VALERIANO GUIOL http://www.muse-eek.com |
February 21, 2005 JOSE BONET: "ENTRE AYER Y HOY" E.G. Tabalet This is a precious collection of melodic instrumental pieces played with piano by Jose Bonet. "Entre ayer y hoy" clearly proves that we are dealing with an experienced musician with excellent skills, not only as a performer but also in the creative arena. The record, entirely composed by him, is very near to the kindest side of Classical Music, with New Instrumental Music touches, and almost always full of melodic romanticism. A certain nostalgic air is present in most of the themes, although there are others with merry, festive passages. All the pieces are a clear sample of the talent of the artist. "Notas de Otonio" has a very special emotional warmth. "Isabel" has an incomparable magic. "Atrezzo barbaro" is most remarkable because of its great strength. Jose Bonet is one of those artists that know how to take us into musical landscapes full of feelings. Of an impeccable make, this is a release that will surely be liked by a wide range of listeners. EDUARDO FONTANA If you wish to purchase this recording you only have to use this link: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/josebonet More info here: http://www.josebonet.com OZONE PLAYER: "FROZEN PAINT ON BOILING CANVAS" Visual Power Ozone Player is an artist with a powerful imagination, whose music always goes beyond the conventional, surpassing even the frontiers of many styles that already are avantgarde by themselves. He has no doubt taken a step forward in his search for "something else". In this album, there is a great variety of styles, colors, emotions, that Ozone Player is able to reflect in his compositions. The music is very original, without having to make use of experimentation with radical sounds. The ten themes that are included in this CD follow several trends within electronic music. The general style of this work can be placed between New Instrumental Music and Techno. There also are passages or themes that get near to Dark Space Music, others near to Gothic, and some very imaginative ones, too difficult to label adequately. EDGAR KOGLER http://www.ozoneplayer.com SHARON WEST: "CANVAS OF MY SOUL" Dusty Dreams Productions The music that Sharon West has composed and performed in this album is of a melodic romantic style. All the pieces are warm, bright. The CD in general could be labelled as innovative New Instrumental Music. By means of a very successfully achieved virtual orchestra mostly based on synthesizers, the artist weaves a collection of fresh pieces, where Classical and also Pop elements, besides some ethereal atmospheres, also appear. HECTOR JORDAN http://www.dustydreams.com RONALD LLOYD - GUILLERMO CAZENAVE: "PARTHENON" Astral Guillermo Cazenave has collaborated in this occasion with Ronald Lloyd to make a Melodic Ambient album inspired in the mystery and the fascination of the ancient Greek culture. The artists combine dreamy melodies of great strength, with unearthly environments, outlining an impressive sonic landscape of a mystic-cosmic character. The melodies of the 25 tracks that constitute this work maintain a great conceptual uniformity and in them we will find all kinds of extremely attractive sonic textures. The synthesizers have perhaps a greater role than the acoustic instruments, even though there is no progress towards complexities in timbre which happen to be inaccessible for the latter. EDUARDO FONTANA http://www.astralweb.info ECHO US: "ECHO US" Absolute Probability Echo Us practises powerful and commercial arguments with a very good basis, both in the lyrical and melodic aspects. This album consists of nine compositions, whose stylistic range fluctuates between SynthPop and Techno. There also are Ambient traits. Most of the pieces are sung. The music has a fast rhythm, yet there also are slow passages, including the theme "My sirens". The most impressive piece in the album is, in my opinion, "Black Thursday", of a mysterious air and a great beauty. DEREK DOARN http://www.absoluteprobability.com IURY LECH: "INSTORMENTS" Amorfik Artifacts Inspired by war and oppression, the composer presents seven shocking themes, full of industrial and electronic sounds, that give a dark atmosphere to the entire album. The structure of the music also consists of difused melodies that come and go, dense, atmospheric environments that surround these melodies, and occasional sound effects, that in some passages are an important part of the ambiance. The melodies have a sinister hue. The rhythms are violent, metallic. No doubt, this is a disquieting album, highly reccommended to those who seek something more on the line of current electronic Trance/Ambient. VIRGINIA TAMAYO http://www.admusiconline.com POCKET UNIVERSE: "PRIMAL" Fyrewind Productions This is a fresh, spontaneous release by Pocket Universe merging Dark Trance with SynthPop, Gothic and other, more difficult to place, traits which contribute to endow this release with a great originality. The melodies usually are mysterious, enigmatic. Though there are slow parts, much of the music has a lively rhythm. The rhythms are usually based on the drums, though in some cases the sequencers play a leading role. ALEJANDRO HINOJOSA http://www.fyrewind.com GNOMUSY: "ETHEREALITY" Non Profit Music The album "Ethereality" by Gnomusic is enjoying a great success both on the part of the audience and on the part of specialized reviews. This work displays the unmistakable traits of an artist who creates his compositions with entire freedom, without allowing himself to get influenced by ephemeral trends of commercial impositions. The music is structured around elements typical of New Instrumental Music and Synth-Pop, with adequate Celtic brush strokes as well as shades of electronic symphonism, which the composer arranges and combines in imaginative ways. As a whole, "Ethereality" is a work that will appeal to those who enjoy good music within the styles here mentioned. VIRGINIA TAMAYO http://www.nonprofitmusic.org VIC HENNEGAN: "PURE CREATIVE SPIRIT" Alien Tribes Music "Pure Creative Spirit" is an interesting album very much in the SynthPop wave, yet also near to Techno, with a series of themes, like "Movin'" or "Passion Peace & Pleasure", which will appeal to a large audience. January 24, 2005 GUITAR GARDEN: "CHINA ROSE" "China Rose" is a magnificient work, where the artist proves that there are no stylistic barriers for creativity, and where he contributes his musical talent to achieve a fresh, emotive sonic journey. Guitar Garden has a very personal style. His music can be defined as New Instrumental Music, although it also enters Pop and World Music. There even are certain Folk touches in some pieces. The guitars have a very important protagonism throughout tht entire album: thus are the sweet melodies developed one by one, in such a way that they succeed in attracting our attention as we listen to them. PASCUAL JURADO http://www.guitargarden.net EMILY HAY: "LIKE MINDS" pfMENTUM An expert in vocal performance, the artist offers us an interesting series of sonic experiments. The music is of an experimental character, with certain passages within the New Music, some entering avantgarde Jazz, and the presence of elements typical of sound art and other trends. The result is a journey through hypnotic sonic worlds, that appear to have been taken out of surrealist dreams. DOMINIQUE CHEVANT http://www.pfmentum.com BERNDHARD LOIBNER: "TRANS/MUTE" Allquiet With "Trans/Mute" we certainly don't have a conventional musical project. The pieces constituting this compact disc flow among metallic vibrations, gusts of enigmatic sounds, and sonic textures suggesting the audible content of a hallucination on industrial landscapes. This is a dark, intriguing work. DOMINIQUE CHEVANT http://loibner.cc THE GREAT KAT: "EXTREME GUITAR SHRED" (Video DVD) TPR Music The Great Kat, one of the world's fastest guitarists, is also a contracultural, controversial artist. The fury that The Great Kat expresses in her performances, as for instance we can see in this DVD, acquires legendary dimensions. Kat began her classical music education at the age of seven on piano, and at nine on the violin in Long Island, NY, USA. After winning numerous competitions, Kat won a full scholarship to The Juilliard School in New York City at the age of fifteen where she graduated with honors. However, she realized that "classical music is dead", and brought her classical virtuosity to the darkest side of Heavy Metal. Her shocking music videoclips and performances can scandalize to quite sectors of our society. "Extreme Guitar shred" contains six musical videoclips dominated by the vertigo of death & violence, which confront the audience to the brutality of the Great Kat's apocalyptic realm. VICENTE GISPERT http://www.greatkat.com EL KAPITAN: "RETROSCAPE" "Retroscape" consists of 11 compositions, whose stylistic range fluctuates between Atmospheric Rock and New Instrumental Music. Part of the music has traits typical of Rock ballads. There also are Jazz-Rock traits. The two musicians that are El Kapitan, combine their respective artistic influences very well, thus achieving that their music possesses an unusual personality, fresh, capable of attracting the attention of the listener at once. The album has obvious progressive and psychedelic influences (the piece "Breathe" is a version of a theme by Pink Floyd), although it is wrapped in some others. ALEJANDRO HINOJOSA http://www.elkapitan.nu FATELESS FLOWS COLLECTIVE: "SHADOWMATH" Fateless Music This album includes 18 interesting compositions by artists of the Fateless Flows Collective. The pieces here gathered are: Indicia: "Rescue me (interlude)". Appogee: "Coral". Kathie Talbot: "Blandula XT". Dream Electric: "not the glow". Tripform: "Silver Reflection". The Luxury Tax: "Hey You Get Off of My Lawn". Zygote: "American love conspiracy". Surface 10 Activity: "birth-collide". The Luxury Tax: "Sex Machine". Appogee: "KDDR mov.2". Constant Flux: "City in the Cold (Remix of EX by Tara King Theory)". Dream Electric: "Super Robo Crunch". Kathie Talbot: "a conversation down". Mr. Soon: "Arcosanti". Niture: "xylophagous". There are pieces near to Trance / Industrial, others with Ambient touches, and several with SynthPop elements, even though all of them keep an innovative character near to the modern electronic trends. VICENTE GISPERT http://www.fatelessflows.com JEFF KAISER AND ANDREW PASK: "THE CHOIR BOYS" pfMENTUM Jeff Kaiser and Andrew Pask perform in this album a series of compositions between Jazz, New Music and experimentation, with some electronic textures that give way to some imaginative samples of Dark Ambient. There are some passages entirely devoted to experimentation with sounds. In this work, the wind instruments have a remarkable role, and it is perhaps here where Kaiser & Pask's skills are most outstanding. DOMINIQUE CHEVANT http://www.pfmentum.com TOM McNALLEY TRIO: "TOM McNALLEY TRIO" pfMENTUM Tom McNalley develops daring ideas in this CD. The result of his efforts is clearly avantgarde: a total of six long tracks with a wide experimental diversity appropriate for those who want to escape from conventionalisms. The style is based on Avantgarde Jazz, but it also incorporates some Psychedelic elements. All the themes have been composed by Tom McNalley. He also plays the guitar, the main soloist instrument in this album. Tom is accompanied by Jonas Tauber, who plays the bass; and Ken Ollis, who plays drums. DOMINIQUE CHEVANT http://www.pfmentum.com VERPLANKEN: "AUTOPSY OF A DREAM" Verplanken skillfuly utilizes elements from Ambient and Psychedelic to combine them into a result that has little to do with orthodox Ambient and psychedelic rock. Verplanken's sonic and melodic constructions turn out to be rather astonishing indeed, as well as unpredictable enough. Some of the compositions are mysterious, with dark melodies enhanced by the electronic soundscapes. Others are ethereal, and can be labelled within Space Music, with symphonic elements. In conclusion, this is an album that no doubt deserves an attentive listening. ALEJANDRO HINOJOSA http://www.verplanken.com ERIK IAN WALKER AND MARIT BROOK-KOTHLOW: "I HAVE NEVER TOLD YOU" Bottomfeeder Records Erik Ian Walker and Marit Brook-Kothlow follow an interesting path through the combination of Jazz with Meditative Music, Ambient, and traits of Classical and Experimental. Each one of the themes, although continuing with the general format, gets near one of the styles mentioned before. In certain cases, it is easy to guess the origin of a given musical element, but in others it turns out to be very difficult to imagine it. VIRGINIA TAMAYO http://www.wackoworldmusic.com BERNDHARD LOIBNER: "FRAGMENTED MEMORY" (video DVD) The eight sound/video pieces that integrate this DVD consist in different experiments, presenting a succession of noises, distorted images of people and urban landscapes, electronic soundscapes, and other effects. The result is a journey through hypnotic worlds, that appear to have been taken out of surrealist dreams. DOMINIQUE CHEVANT http://loibner.cc |
