Abby Newton is a cellist who advocates the use of the cello in traditional Scottish music. She works on both the folk and classical music scenes and, of course, Crossing to Scotland, her first CD, features the cello as the soloist instrument. Here, she is also accompanied by other guest musicians (Alasdair Fraser, fiddle; Paul Machlis, piano; David Hornung, accordion; Kim Robertson, Celtic harp; Al Petterway, guitar; and Scott Petito, upright bass). The album includes 14 pieces, many of them traditional Scottish tunes. The material is very rhythmic, full of energy and passion. An indispensable addition for lovers of Celtic music, traditional and contemporary.
