In some occasions we have wondered where and when it all began, and we have never been able to find an answer to completely satisfy our curiosity. However, if we had to choose someone whose musical talent and presence have done more than those of others to make the phenomenon of the new musics come true, the post would perhaps be given to Mike Oldfield. Certainly, Tubular Bells, released in 1973, does not possess all the ingredients of stylistic fusion (extensively spiced with Celtic traits) of later works as yet, but on the other hand it has its own stature, which made it into one of the great works of the modern music of our times. The youth of its author, the imagination, the innovative ideas present in each one of its notes, and the way open to all its sequels, have turned this recording not only into a super-bestseller, but also into one of the scarce keys that have been able to open the golden chest of the new musics. Certainly, there are many other chests, yet not all of them are made with the same metal.
