July 16, 1998. SONAR 98.
Spain. On June 18th., 19th. and 20th., 1998, the Sonar international festival of innovative musics in general, and specially devoted to Techno and other genres close to Techno, was held in Barcelona. Several institutions took part in the organization of the event. The amount of activities was plentiful, and several of them took place in a simultaneous way. Besides the concerts, there were a number of lectures, discussion panels, exhibitions of interactive arts, sessions with charismatic DJs, spaces with sales stands, rooms equipped with CD-ROM players, CDI, video, and audio, so as to allow all visitors to see and / or listen to works according to their own selections. Sonar also had a remarkable presence within Internet. With respect to the performances given by the different musicians taking part in the event, the most remarkable one was by Kraftwerk. In previous editions, Sonar has included live performances by Neuronium, Orbital, Holger Czukay, Sven Vath, Albert Giménez (an ex-member of Neuronium), Finis Africae, Suso Saiz, Iury Lech, El Sueño de Hyparco, Jorge Reyes, Macromassa, Fangoria and others.

July 16, 1998. THE MUSIC OF BIG BLOCK 454.
Big Block 454 is a band from Manchester, England. They are influenced by such bands and artists as The Residents, Faust, Can, Captain Beefheart, Zappa, Syd Barrett, Harry Partch, Bela Bartok and Brian Eno. They like collaborating with artists and other non-musicians on multimedia projects. They have performed at various art gallery events, and recently worked with artists Russell Mills and Ian Walton on their installation "Measured in Shadows", which was shown in England and Eire. The music was recorded at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios, and consisted of 16 different sound sources throughout the installation. They have released various records, tapes and CD's. At present, they are working on the music for a series of Internet videos by computer artists, "The Art of Slackness"; and they are collaborating over the Internet with a Russian industrial musician. Their music is an interesting combination of alternative Rock and several elements of sonic experimentation.
