A self-taught ethnomusicologist, American Indian historian and long time classical and jazz flutist, Gary Stroutsos began playing American Indian wooden flutes in the mid-1980's. He brings his own cultural references and jazz stylings to his music, making it unlike that of any other artist working in this genre.
Stroutsos has studied many wood flute styles by playing alongside Native American flutists such as Kevin Locke, Keith Bear, Joseph Fire Crow and Bryan Akipa. The differences between Stroutsos and other artists include his jazz-like improvisation in certain passages (specially in concert), his inclusion of musicians from around the world and his breathing techniques.
